how to get the most out of your weekend: 5 tips
Without fail, we sprint out of the office every Friday afternoon and tell ourselves it’s going to be the most epic weekend ever.
“I’m going to run a half-marathon, visit the new brewery in town, cook dinner for my friends, AND update my blog. I’m soooo awesome!”
But then before we can even down one beer, it’s 11 PM on Sunday night and all we have to show for our weekend is an empty ice cream container and an explosion of pillows and blankets that was our Netflix nest.
Or maybe that’s just me… (dropping your cable definitely helps though, as I wrote here)
If we want to have a weekend that is fulfilling AND productive, five tips that can help are:
1. Make a To-Do list that is actually fun!
It doesn’t have to be a concrete plan, just a list of activities/tasks you would like to accomplish over the weekend. Keep it realistic and make sure you throw in enjoyable activities too, instead of just the mundane house chores that need to get done. My list might be:
Go to the movies
Meet friends for drinks
Buy a birthday present for my sister
If you don’t tackle all of your goals, at least you’ve done something instead of having the Netflix vampire suck away your whole weekend.
And if you only manage to do the fun stuff, that’s okay too...
2. Eat a King's breakfast
During the week breakfast is all about survival mode.
What can I eat in the least amount of time with the least amount of effort?
I WILL DIE WITHOUT THOSE EXTRA 10 MINUTES OF SLEEP!!!!
So we find ourselves eating the same boring thing every day…..
If we want to enjoy each moment of our weekend we can get start by mixing up our breakfast routine.
Go out for brunch. Try a new recipe at home. Make breakfast in bed for your significant other. Eat dinner for breakfast!
Saturday morning brunches at home were a weekly event when I was growing up and I’ve continued this tradition into my adult life. Lately it’s been all about the bacon and egg breakfast tacos. Yummmmm.
3. Move your body
Most of us spend 8 hours every weekday sitting at our desks, doing nothing but staring into a screen. And then when we get home in the evenings we sit on the couch and stare into more screens. It’s complete madness.
If we move our bodies for a change, the endorphins that are released into our bodies can make us feel happier and healthier, allowing us to enjoy our weekend even more.
Whatever it is you enjoy – yoga, swimming, walking your dog, even shopping – you’ll feel way better by moving than you will if you stay in bed all weekend watching The Big Bang Theory.
4. Reach out to a family member or friend.
Use the free time you have on the weekends to reach out to someone you haven’t talked to in a while.
My friends and family are scattered around the world so the weekends are usually the only times when our timezones allow our schedules to sync.
Sometimes it requires planning, but it always makes my day when I get to talk to them.
5. Take back your Sunday evenings
And finally, as the weekend is winding down, it can be easy to moan and gripe through your entire Sunday evening.
I have to work tomorrow….F#CK!!
But instead of just complaining and “preparing for the week” I always make sure that I do at least ONE fun thing on Sunday evenings.
I might go see a movie that I’ve been waiting to see, invite a friend over for dinner, or read a chapter of a book I’m enjoying.
It’s a great way to end your weekend on a positive note.
We all live busy lives and our weekends are short, way too short.
But if we go into our weekend mindfully, knowing what we want and need, we can experience the best parts of life AND get our boring adult stuff done too….
